Divorce is a challenging process. Divorcing a spouse that is a narcissist can add fuel to the fire. A narcissist will try to manipulate and take control, which may derail the legal process. A divorce that is not necessarily complicated may turn into a high-conflict struggle shaped by manipulation, control, and denial. One of the most damaging tactics that often surfaces is gaslighting.
Gaslighting occurs when a narcissistic spouse twists facts, denies events, or distorts reality in ways designed to make you doubt your own memory and judgment. During divorce, this can derail progress, create unnecessary disputes, and make it even harder to advocate for your own best interests. A spouse who gaslights may deny financial agreements, rewrite conversations, or insist you are “imagining things” when you try to hold them accountable.
In our upcoming webinar on divorcing a narcissist, we will explore how gaslighting can show up and why it’s so important to be prepared. Participants will learn practical steps for documenting interactions, setting boundaries, and staying anchored in reality even when manipulation is at play.
Not everyone meets the full diagnosis of a Narcissist. A spouse may be difficult and defiant, mirroring the characteristics of Narcissism. It has been the experience in our practice that the same preparation and strategies for divorcing a Narcissist work well with any spouse who is being difficult.
